As the past week has been particularly rough weather wise, I thought this video might cheer you up. It did me! I made the video back in 2016. It’s me retelling the story of catching the biggest common I’d ever seen. Just seeing the sun and the conditions at the time we filmed this are enough to make you long for Spring. So I hope it brightens your day and gets you looking forward to the coming season.
I came down here last autumn and I had a little bit of a struggle, to be honest. I’d done a good few nights but I couldn’t get near the fish. They were all sitting in the weed, literally living in the weed.
I came down here one night and it was a super moon. The moon was absolutely massive and it was at the end of September, start of October. There were leaves blown all over the lake. Typical golden, beautiful, autumn sunshine.
When I got down to the lake I saw that we’d had a big wind and it had blown all of the weed everywhere. There was a little channel in the bay and straight away, when I walked in there I saw a bit of bubbling. I hadn’t been standing there long when I saw a fish slap over on a far margin. So that was my mind made up. I was going to fish!
I Wrecked My Set Up!
About one o’clock in the morning I had a fly intake but I ran out the wrong end of the bivvy. I got tangled up in my brolly. Absolutely wrecked my set-up. Bent my storm poles. Then eventually got to my rod and it was a swan. It had gone through all of my lines. So it was a bit of a nightmare.
I rebaited in the dark under the full moon. Got back into my sleeping bag, cursing and thinking I’d ruined my chance. It must have been a couple of hours later when I heard a massive fish jump out only a feet from where I was fishing and woke me up. Because I was in a tiny bay, it echoed in the bay.
Probably an hour after that, the rod belted off. This fish I couldn’t stop. It took loads of line off me. It took me into a load of weed and I was pulling and pulling but nothing was happening.
In the end, I gave it another pull and I started getting this big weed bed moving. I got the weed bed right into the edge. It was quite shallow along there but this weed bed was massive. I couldn’t net it.
So I took my socks off, jumped in the lake with my torch and I started to have a look around. And there I saw a massive back sitting right there in the weeds. So I got my line, got my net and netted it.
Landing The Biggest Common I’d Ever Seen!
When I looked in the net I was hoping it was a particular fish. When I saw it was not the particular fish, I wasn’t gutted but I thought “oh well, I didn’t catch the fish that I was after this time”. But when I looked harder, I was blown away. It was the biggest common I’d ever seen.
As soon as I looked at it I knew it was a fifty-pound common. When I weighed it, it was actually fifty-one pound. So a brilliant result. A brilliant session and never to be forgotten.
