My eldest son turned 11 a couple of weeks ago and all he wanted for his birthday was a little 2 rod set up so he could go fishing with me. With my fishing mainly being during the week I decided to take him for a day at the weekend over a local day ticket water where he could have ago at some double figure carp.

We arrived nice an early got the swim we wanted then got the sticks out, and within 35minutes of him having his rods in the water he had already caught his first carp a lovely 10lb common. The day went by a bit slow and with him sitting under the brolly tying his own rigs I was hoping for a few more. Within a couple of hours of catching nothing the fish switched on and by the end of his first proper day session he managed 5 carp to 12lb and a smile ear to ear.

All 5 were caught using 2 different types of rigs ,the first was a snow man rig which was fished with a 15mm nutcracker bottom bait and a small 10mm nutcracker pop up on top, the second rig was a standard hair rig fished with a 15mm bottom. Both rigs were fished in conjunction with nutcracker 15mm boilies, half and whole baits which were glazed in nutcracker glug…
